Why I Left Pinterest
Here are the details and the article that inspired me to delete all my boards and my entire account:
http://ddkportraits.com/2012/02/why-i-tearfully-deleted-my-pinterest-inspiration-boards/
Here are some other reasons I deleted my entire Pinterest account, in no particular order:
1. Time - It takes a good amount of time to pin things. It's just another distraction that keeps me from things I should be doing.
2. Search - I can always find anything I had pinned on Pinterest by googling it and bookmarking it. If I can't find it, then I'll be fine without it.
3. Detachment - I always like another opportunity to practice detachment. Does Pinterest make me a better person? Probably not. Sometimes it makes me jealous of things I can't have in life right now.
4. Stress - Sometimes I get tired of all the projects on Pinterest that are so cool and I want to do them all. Not having Pinterest is just another way for me to not worry about things that aren't important (like having a pottery barn house, etc.)
I am a little person in the world and I'm happy that I don't have to know what everyone else is doing at every moment in time, or what projects everyone is doing. I read a good number of blogs and my blogging friends usually share if they've found something really great, like a free sewing pattern. I will go back to bookmarking things the old fashioned way. Simple is best.
It was a fun little fling with Pinterest, but I already got it out of my system. Kind of like going to Target, filling my shopping cart with things I know I don't need, and by the time I'm at check-out, putting most of them back and sticking just with the things I need.

Yikes! I never got into Pinterest. I knew it would be a time sucker. Plus, one time when my husband sent me a page of gluten-free recipes, it looked so unorganized. My eyes couldn't settle on what to look at and I had a hard time figuring out if I missed a recipe.
ReplyDeleteI always bookmark ideas I come across by subject or time of year so when I need inspiration I can check them out. Or, like I know what we'll be learning next year so I have separate folders for those subjects as well. Usually I get those ideas from a few schoolish blogs I follow. My other blogs are more homey (like yours) and/or inspirational (faith). It's enough. :)
Enjoy your pinterest-free life!
It's more than about being sued (though that IS a concern). The Terms of use (that I agreed to but admittedly did not fully read) state that they own the rights to what’s there and you the user give them those rights and warrant that you have the right to do so with any content you pin or re-pin.
ReplyDeleteWell that wasn't true for me. I did NOT own the rights to all the content I had pinned there, nor did I have permission from the owner, nor did I have the necessary permissions and release that give those rights to Pinterest. I get that they have to cover themselves but by doing so they are laying the burden of copyright infringement on you the user and if I cannot pin because I can’t warrant that I own the content or have rights to it, I can't be there without violating the terms of agreement and most importantly, my conscience.
Well said, Michele.
DeleteWhile I will still be using Pinterest (for now) this is good food for thought. I wish I could make a private pinboard but I guess that defeats the purpose?
ReplyDeleteGreat link and article! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAs a musician, I'm always on the lookout for copyright infringements. Buying originals can be costly, but versus the cost of a lawsuit, I'd gladly spend the money up front. It keeps my mind free from worry.
Again, thanks for the insightful information.
I deleted my Pinterest this week. I googled 'Pinterest copyright infringement' and was shocked. Sick. So bye-bye Pinterest for me too.
ReplyDeleteHope you are all doing well!
Hugs,
Zuzu
I have been meaning to delete my pinterest too- the terms of use are shocking! I felt the same way about the time-suck it can become as well and since I already have lots of other beautiful and encouraging places on the net I like to visit (like your blog!) I have been on it very rarely anyways. Bookmarking is just as good and doesn't leave me feeling overwhelmed either!
