Every time the boys do a good deed, they can put a dry bean into the jar. On Easter Sunday, the dry beans will be magically transformed into jellybean candies. The kids, ages 6, 3, and 14 months (ok, the baby isn't really participating) always double check with me about putting a bean in the jar. Here are some examples of good deeds that earn beans.
Bean Earning Deeds:
- Doing a favor or chore without complaining.
- Sharing with siblings.
- Being kind all day.
- Having no fits all day.
- Being polite.
- Doing your best while learning.
- Not whining.
- Cleaning up without being asked.
- Getting dressed for the day without complaining. (Yeah, I know, right? Homeschooled kids have no idea how good they have it.)
- Hanging up your coat without being asked.
- Being good during Mass and/or adoration.
- Saying your bedtime prayers well.
I'm sure as we go along, I will become lenient and give beans for things they should do automatically, like...brushing your teeth extra well, or not laying over baby brother. And pretty soon I'll be giving myself beans too for being patient with the children and not staying up too late blogging.
Ok. You get he idea: good deeds = beans = jellybeans = a holier family (by the grace of God).

this is a lovely Lenten tradition for families with little ones. i was ready to switch this Lenten activity out this year but my 16 yo daughter insisted that it remain.
ReplyDeletemay your little ones grow to work for Jesus in everything they do. prayers for a fruitful Lenten season.

Yes, we're doing it too though I printed up slips of paper for ideas for the day. Though I'll throw in extras for impromptu good deeds. Your jar is so pretty. What a simple ribbon can do. :) BTW, I love not laying over your little brother. I need to add that one for keeping out of baby's face!
ReplyDeleteCute idea :)
ReplyDeleteYou are good mom teaching good things to your children! I love the idea. I had small stickers on a cute paper on the refrigerator door. This brought me sweet memories from the past.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I think Asher and Amelia definitely need a good deeds jar this Lent (or always?!). And it feels like the perfect thing to help me with one of my own Lenten goals- no yelling ;) Miss you friend!
ReplyDeleteI've seen this used to help a family cope with problems after a new baby arrived. It really works! Perhaps you should have some joker beans for good deeds you hadn't thought of. My children were always surprising me with new ways of being helpful and good as they matured.
